Plants are often confronted with harsh environmental conditions that could hamper their growth and productivity. Elucidating the stress responses of plants is therefore imperative for researchers, breeders and farmers to improve plant performance and develop stress-resilient crops. Various strategies such as examining the root system architecture, exogenous application of stress-ameliorating metabolites, transcriptomic and proteomic analyses, and SNP mining have been used to gain a cohesive understanding on how plants cope with stress.
