As part of the National Training Week (NTW), MICCI Perak was pleased to collaborate with our proud member, Quest International University (QIU), in hosting an engaging and timely talk titled “The Ethical Use & Legal Limits of Generative AI: Where Do We Draw The Line?" on 18th June 2025.
The session was led by Mr. Zaheer Merchant, Director for Corporate & Legal Affairs and Director for Education at the QI Group of Companies, and a member of the QIU Council. Mr Merchant shared thought-provoking insights on the rapidly evolving landscape of generative AI tools such as ChatGPT and DeepSeek, and the critical questions they raise within academia, business, and society.
Key issues discussed included:
- Academic integrity and originality
- Data privacy and intellectual property rights
- Discriminatory bias in AI models
- Accountability, misinformation, and deepfakes
The talk attracted a diverse audience, including legal professionals, industry leaders, business entrepreneurs, and academics from institutions such as Politeknik Ungku Omar and QIU. The event was further honoured by the presence of Mr Kuna Senathirajah, Group Managing Director of QI Group, and Mr Harith Iskander, Adjunct Professor at QIU and a well-known figure in the creative industry. “It’s not about whether we use AI, but how we use it — and who’s accountable when things go wrong,” Mr. Merchant remarked.
The session served as a strong reminder of the importance of cross-sector collaboration and dialogue in shaping responsible AI governance. As AI continues to transform every aspect of our lives, such discussions are vital to ensuring that innovation remains grounded in ethical and human-centric values.
